Understanding Jackson’s Climate Challenges and Community Initiatives

Understanding Jackson’s Climate Challenges and Community Initiatives

Jackson, Mississippi, faces significant climate challenges, including extreme heat, heavy precipitation, and wildfire risks. Understanding these hazards and the community’s proactive measures is essential for building a resilient future.

Climate Risks in Jackson

According to ClimateCheck, Jackson’s heat risk is rated as extreme, with projections indicating increased temperatures in the coming decades. The city also faces very high precipitation risk, leading to potential flooding concerns. Notably, about 27% of buildings in Jackson are at risk of flooding, with an average 41% chance of experiencing a flood approximately 1.6 feet deep over 30 years. Additionally, approximately 95% of buildings are at risk of wildfire, with the risk level for these buildings being significant.

Community Initiatives and Environmental Programs

In response to these challenges, Jackson has implemented several initiatives:

Stormwater Management

The city’s Stormwater Management Program aims to protect and improve water quality in local creeks, tributaries, and drainage systems leading to the Pearl River. The program focuses on public education, pollution prevention, and compliance with state and federal regulations.

Solid Waste Education and Enforcement Programs (SWEEP)

Jackson’s SWEEP addresses litter prevention and waste management. Residents can report litter issues via the city’s 311 service. The program also offers bulk item collection and a waste tire disposal service at the city’s Rubbish Landfill.

Environmental Service Center (ESC)

Located at 1570 Terry Road, the ESC provides a safe alternative for residents to dispose of unwanted household products. The center operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and the fourth Saturday of each month from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities Initiative

In March 2024, Jackson was selected to join Bloomberg Philanthropies’ American Sustainable Cities initiative. This three-year program aims to support local climate action and create more prosperous communities. Jackson will receive dedicated staff and technical assistance to develop and implement transformative solutions in the buildings and transportation sectors.

By understanding the climate risks and actively participating in these initiatives, Jackson’s residents can contribute to building a more resilient and sustainable community.
